Microneedling Q & A
What is microneedling?
Microneedling is a dermatologic procedure in which tiny needles prick the first layer of your skin to encourage healing and increase collagen production. Microneedling is a minimally invasive anti-aging technique that can reduce the appearance of scars, wrinkles, and large pores.
How does microneedling work?
The goal of microneedling is to generate new collagen when the skin heals after being pricked. This is called collagen induction therapy. Increasing collagen in your skin this way causes more blood flow to the skin and increased elasticity from new collagen so skin becomes fuller and smoother.

Microneedling can cause minor skin irritation, so you may notice your skin is slightly red for a few days after treatment. Overall, microneedling is safer and less invasive than alternative treatments with no recovery time or risk of bruising, so you can get back to your normal activities the same day.
What are the uses of collagen induction therapy?
- Premature aging
- Sagging skin
- Fine lines and wrinkles
- Scarring from acne, chicken pox, injuries, and surgery
How is microneedling done?
Dr. Ather uses the SkinPen®, a medical-grade microneedling device to safely and effectively induce collagen production. The SkinPen is the only FDA-approved microneedling device on the market that can be used to reduce the appearance of acne scarring.
The SkinPen can also be used for other skin concerns related to scars, wrinkles, and dull, saggy skin. Typically, Dr. Ather recommends three or more microneedling sessions spaced out over a month in order to get the best results.
Your sessions can last anywhere from 10 minutes to an hour, depending on the size of the treatment area. With microneedling using the SkinPen, you can see a noticeable improvement in the appearance of your skin for up to six months after treatment.*
If you want a natural, noninvasive solution to wrinkles and scarring, microneedling can help. Call or schedule a consultation at Nova Derm Institute now to find out more.
